God bless Netflix VOD, my constant and faithful companion while at the drawing table. How I love you.

In just the past couple weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing:
Moving Violations
Blind Fury
Zombie Strippers
I’m Still Here
Who Is Harry Nilsson?
Casino
The Fabulous Baker Boys
The Bounty Hunter
Slap Shot
The Last of Sheila
Beautiful Girls

There are more. I recommend all of them.

Watch more movies!

Just wanted to say thanks to my pal Pete, and all the men and women–firefighters, police, and paramedics–who do the important work so folks like me can sit around drawing funny pictures all day, safe and sound.

You guys rock. Thank you.

Capitis Furtiva

An interesting evolutionary example:

What looks like the head of the Capitis Furtiva, more commonly known as the Wilyhead, is actually a brightly colored protuberance made of keratin, the very same substance that makes up a rhinoceros’ horn.

In a stunning example of predator camouflage, the animal’s actual head is suspended above it’s hindquarters at the end of its spine, giving it the aspect of a long tail with a bulbous knob at the end.

Beware this cunning animal–its head can strike suddenly, with the speed of a cobra, and its mouth holds rows of razor sharp and envenomed teeth.

You have been warned.

140 and counting!

A new year, and 140 drawings into the experiment. Our findings to date:

Having. So. Much. Fun.

Some folks I know are prolific and dedicated sketchbook-keepers. Me? I love notebooks. Buy ’em. Carry ’em around. But always seem to come to the end of the day without having added anything to ’em.

Until now.

With a simple and achievable goal, I’m drawing more than I have in years. Just a drawing a day: No over-thinking. No getting precious. No judgments. (Well, some judgments. There are some stinkers in there.)

But trying not to judge. Instead, I’m having a tremendous time just enjoying the feeling of complete creative freedom. Just playing.

The only thing I really need to change is how much time I’m spending on each drawing. Gotta keep it simple, and try not to eat up too much of my time at the drawing board each day–after all, there are storyboards to draw, animations to finish, and pitches to write as well. I may also need to start archiving the drawings, perhaps by year. Maybe collect them into pdf files or books. At some point, I’ll need to do some research on publishing.

On a bright note I’ve found that I’ve really primed the creative pump. As the days and drawings pile up, its getting easier. So I’m looking forward to more. More days. More drawings. More play.

Maybe I’ll break out those notebooks, too.

You keep creating, too. Would love to see what you’re playing around with.
